I think it’s safe to say that all parents experience ‘those days’ that feel like they’re never going to end. Raising our little people can be hard and often unrelenting work – especially if you’re sleep deprived and don’t like to drink your coffee cold! Hungry newborns need to be fed and grumpy toddlers have an uncanny ability to time their meltdowns with the moment mummy’s back hits the couch. But as the members of the ‘been there before you mums brigade’ told us when they handed over our baby shower gifts, these days won’t last forever and it’s up to us to make the most of them. (Meet Keep Me Bear. Made from your little ones baby clothes he is an adorable keepsake.)
But let’s be honest, living in the parenting moment can be hard work. Especially when there are a million other things shouting for our attention every day. I think most parents find they need to be reminded often to focus on the fact that our little people won’t be so little very soon. Their constant desire for our time and attention will start to fade away and, in all likelihood, we’ll be looking back at those wonderful years when we were the center of our children’s world and wishing we’d soaked it all up just a little bit more. So how is it that we can find the balance and have an attitude of ‘living in the moment’ with our children? One thing is for sure; it’s not about neglecting your own needs or putting yourself last. A parent who can take the time out to regularly just experience and enjoy their children is one who has learned the secret to self-care and understands that being aware is the biggest key. Just being conscious that though the days often feel long the years are going to pass by quickly is often enough to shape our choices and put our attitude exactly where it needs to be.
